It is hard to believe, but it is going to be even colder this weekend!  Here are some fun (mostly) indoor activities for the weekend!


Saturday, December 11th



11am – 4pm: Arlington Arts Center, Arlington, VA

A workshop for children to make handmade gifts for someone special.  The project is a big secret, so keep it as a surprise from parents.  Attendees will learn how to create gifts while developing their art-making skills.  Students will creatively wrap their gift to keep it hidden.


Molded Chocolate Holiday Lollies

10am – 12pm: The Sugar Cube, Alexandria, VA
A fun session where children will layer white and milk chocolate to create chocolate lollypops in molds.  They will also lear how to package them with cello, stickers, and ribbon.  For children ages 5 – 8.


Victorian Ornament Workshop

10am: Cherry Hill Farmhouse, Falls Church, VA

Come to Cherry Hill Farmhouse to create a beautiful Victorian ornament to take home.  Kids will also get the chance to learn about decorations in Victorian times. The cost is $8 per person, and is appropirate for children ages 8 and up.


Breakfast with Santa

9:30 – 11am: The Carlyle Club, Alexandria, VA

Santa and his elves will have a treat for all the children.- breakfast is a traditional buffet.


Christmas Toy Train Show

9am – 2:00p: Kena Shriners Temple Ballroom , Fairfax, VA

See operating train layouts, shop for collectible and new trains, accessories and train related items, visit Santa Claus or bring a broken train to the Train Doctor.  Kena Shriners Temple Ballroom.  $5; 12 and younger, free.,1176884.html


Claude Moore Colonial Farm Wassail

1pm – 4pm: Claude Moore Colonial Farm, McLean, VA

Come to the farm’s orchard for singing, dancing to encourage a “howling crop”.  Enjoy hot apple cider, sugar cakes, a bonfire, and 18th century games.

11am: Pentagon City – Borders, Arlington, VA

Gulf Branch Visit with Santa

9am-12pm & 1-4pm: Gulf Branch, Arlington, VA

Holiday Helpers

Saturday, December 11, 1-5pm and Sunday, December 12, 1-5pm: Long Branch Nature Center, Arlington, VA

Long Branch will watch your kids while you shop.  They will keep them busy with crafts, games, animal encounter, and short films.  Cost is $25, and is for ages 4 – 14.   Saturday, Dec. 11, Program #: 622920-A, Sunday, Dec. 12, Program #: 622920-B.


Santa’s Workshop and National Christmas Tree

Ellipse, Washington, DC

Visit the Ellipse in DC (the elliptical shaped park between the White House and the Washington Monument), to visit with Santa and check out the National Christmas tree.  You can go inside Santa’s workshop to see where the mails comes in, visit with the elves, sit on Santa’s lap, and receive a free photo with Santa!

Besides Santa’s Workshop and the National Christmas Tree, there are model railroads, the Nativity Scene and the Yule Log.  Along with the National tree, there are 56 smaller trees, representing the 50 states, 5 territories, and DC.  The trees will be lit every night at dusk until 11pm through January 1st.

Santa’s Workshop will be open December 11th through December 24th.
